Rainforests & Waterfalls

Fruit Bat Falls captured in the remote Australian location of Cape York, QLD, this is an early evening shot, also my third attempt which finally resulted in the right light. It is a challenging composition as walking across slippery rocks carrying my camera could have ended badly. 

A very different view to that normally seen, I wasn't happy with the compositions I could see on the 'normal' side of the falls, so a slippery scramble across and my vision was fulfilled, the soft water flowing down the terraces of Fortescue Falls. 

 At the bottom of Dales Gorge in Karijini National Park lies Fortescue Falls, reached by a slog up the canyon, or a walk down the nice new stairs, followed by some rock scrambling to get to the base. 

The water slips down these hard iron rock terraces, flowing down off the Karijini Plateau. Sunset lights up the walls of the gorge and reflects into the flow.   

 Fern Pool is one of those magical places that just sings to you. At the end of Dales Gorge in Karijini, and recently refurbished, this excellent swimming spot has warmish water coming over the falls, keeping the whole pool at a nice temperature. This image was taken just before Sunset, after we had had an amazing swim. 

Souita Falls, a not so popular waterfall in the Atherton Tablelands waterfall district. This beautiful vertical panorama image with outstanding waterflow sweeps you off your feet.

The history of Paronella Park in the Queensland, is magical and the added fact that this waterfall was used to create hydropower for the entire park and it's castle, ballroom and various other buildings. I feel I timed it perfectly to capture the sun setting behind the waterfall, bringing special light into the artwork. 

The forgotten waterfall of Cape York, QLD. One of the most stunning in the Cooktown area. 

What a way to end our day along the Bloomfield Track. This is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Cooktown Region, Cape York, QLD. Just a short rock hopping walk leads you to this huge waterfall, but you cannot swim here, one word, Crocodiles!

 Where do I begin? This is the second time I came to Fruit Bat Falls, Cape York Peninsula as we had a hard drive failure after our first visit! I kept the same composure as last time and luckily had a beautiful Cape York night to show off this beauty and its colours.

Crystal Shower Falls in full flow, cascade over the cliff edge through the lush rainforest in the Dorrigo National Park. This unusual aspect of the falls requires careful foot placement as you navigate off the path. These falls are unique in that there is an amazing cave you can walk behind the falls to.

This small unnamed creek in the Dorrigo National Park crosses the path as you walk down to the Crystal Shower Falls. I wasn't satisfied with the image from the pathway, so scrambled very carefully down to this spot. I captured a very very different image looking downstream, and turned around to leave when I spotted this composition up stream, back towards the path. The stream cuts down through the forest.

 We were walking through the high altitude forest up in WIld Cattle Creek State Forest when the weather started closing in. Amanda raced back to get our truck and bring it to the road near where we would finish the walk, and I was walking with Aria, our daughter. We crossed a small creek and reached this spot on the Mobong River. I spent about 10 minutes capturing different compositions when I started to feel raindrops on my shoulders. 

Cursing the weather, I packed up quickly and headed off through the rainforest to the road to meet up with Amanda, all of us totally soaked as she drove up to pick us up.

 Wild Cattle Creek in the Dorrigo area of New South Wales. This is a small picnic area we came across as we drove through the area. I headed for a walk down the creek to see what I could find, and came across this magical spot where the water flows over this small rock ledge. Lush, green and beautiful, this is a fantastic spot for lunch.

This composition in the Watagans National Park caught my eye as we were walking through the forest. I hadn't brought my Camera with me for the walk, not expecting to find anything of interest, however when I saw that composition I knew it would make a great vertical capture.  I Raced down the track back to the truck, retrieved my camera and hurried back.  I spent about 45 minutes capturing this amazing spot and ended up with two amazing images, a vertical composition, this one, and a landscape panorama image. The flow of the water down the stream calms me as it passes the vibrant green ferns on each side, as warm summer light filters through the trees above.

My eyes are drawn to the beautiful mossy rocks and the large tree with roots stretching down to the water. The warm summer light filtering through the trees above gives vibrance and a delicate touch to the green ferns in this image.

Curtis Falls at Tamborine Mt in the Gold Coast Hinterland is a really special pocket of National Park Rainforest in the midst of roads and other tourism developments. A quick 15 minute walk from the Carpark leads you down to the falls themselves. Seriously calming, this place is full of wildlife and tranquility. This is my first released image taken on my new Sony A7RIV Camera.  It took me a good 20 minutes of experimentation to get this shot just right. 

This image was created while on a spontaneous stop at Somersby Falls on the way home after spending the weekend in Sydney for Vivid.  We had a bit of time before we had to be home and we hadn’t been to Somersby Falls in a number of years. We also knew with the recent rainfall the falls should have been flowing nicely. So, we decided to drop in.

I forgot to charge my batteries for my camera after being at Vivid the night before so I knew I didn’t have many shots left. I scouted the location back and forth looking for the composition I was imaging.

To get to this spot, I had to walk along the slippery rock edge and try not to get my shoes and socks soaked, climb up and perch myself on the edge of a boulder. I struggled to get my tripod to steady itself due to the legs needing to be at such different lengths and positions. The amount of water cascading was perfect for this long exposure and the shine on the tree trunk brings another element of life to the image. I love the varying colours, shapes and layers of the rock shelf which forms the waterfall.  

We were the only ones here at this particular time and we felt a world away from any civilisation, which was such a contrast to the previous days in Sydney.
